Course description: The purpose of this course is to teach participants the purpose and function of the components that make up the transmission portion of a transmission and distribution (T&D) system. These components include conductors, insulators, and structures. The course also gives a basic overview of the major tasks that must be accomplished when a transmission line is constructed and discusses the principal concerns of a lineman during transmission line inspection. At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to list and describe the major components in a transmission line and explain their functions. They should also be able to describe the basic tasks involved in constructing and inspecting a transmission line.
Course syllabus:
- Explain the purpose of the transmission portion of a T&D system
- Identify the components that make up a typical transmission line
- Explain the basic purpose of a power grid
- Explain the purpose of conductors
- Describe some of the basic characteristics of conductors
- Differentiate between solid, stranded, and bundled conductors
- Explain the purpose of insulators
- Recognize and identify the types of insulators commonly used on transmission lines
- Identify and describe some of the typical mounting positions for insulators on transmission lines
- List and explain three basic classifications of structures used on transmission lines
- List and explain some of the factors that affect the design of transmission structures
- Construction
- List and explain some of the key tasks that must be performed in order to construct a transmission line
- Explain the basic process for stringing conductors
- List and explain some of the basic considerations for making a visual inspection and a climbing inspection of a transmission line
- Identify some of the unique concerns associated with inspecting metal poles, wooden poles, and towers
- Explain why it is important to document findings, such as a transmission line inspection
