Course description: The purpose of this course is to teach basic safety principles and practices applicable to work on overhead lines. The principles stressed are proper attitude, preplanning, care and inspection of equipment, and creation of a safe work area. At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to recognize the electrical and structural hazards associated with overhead line maintenance and know what to do to avoid them. They should know how to identify, care for, inspect, and use the protective equipment necessary for working near energized lines and equipment. They should also know the correct procedures for working aloft, and they should understand how to perform a fast and safe pole top rescue.

Course syllabus:

  • Introduction to Safety
  • Explain why proper attitude is an important part of safety on the job
  • Describe major types of hazards associated with overhead line maintenance
  • Explain why proper equipment storage is an important safety practice
  • Care and Use of Safety Equipment
  • Describe and identify safety equipment used in overhead line maintenance
  • Demonstrate proper testing and maintenance of safety equipment
  • Demonstrate proper use of safety equipment
  • Climbing Safety
  • Describe or demonstrate how to store climbing equipment
  • Describe or demonstrate how to inspect climbing equipment
  • Describe or demonstrate how to inspect a pole for rot
  • Describe or demonstrate how to guy a pole
  • Electrical Hazard
  • Identify primary circuits in different configurations, including energized jumpers
  • Identify grounds and grounded equipment
  • Describe or demonstrate how to use insulating covers to create a safe work area
  • Safety With Tools and Equipment
  • Demonstrate safe methods of using tools and equipment designed for overhead line maintenance
  • Pole Top Rescue
  • Demonstrate the proper method of tying a lowering hitch
  • Describe the proper procedures for lowering an electrical shock victim from a pole
