Course description: Tree Trimming, Part 2 is designed to familiarize participants with procedures and equipment typically associated with emergency line clearance work. Emphasis is placed on the safety aspects of the job. It is assumed that participants have completed Tree Trimming, Part 1 or have equivalent background knowledge. At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to describe various aspects of emergency tree trimming work, including how to plan and perform a job safely. They should also be able to identify some of the tree cuts that are used for clearing trees and tree limbs from power lines.

Course syllabus:

  • Planning a Tree Trimming Job
  • Identify three basic steps for planning a tree trimming job and describe how each can be accomplished
  • Working Safely
  • Describe how to perform tree trimming work safely from a bucket truck and from a pole
  • Describe how to perform tree trimming work safely from the ground, from a ladder, and from a tree
  • Controlling the Load
  • Describe considerations that affect whether rigging is needed for tree trimming work
  • Identify some commonly used tree cuts and explain when each type is used
