Troubleshooting Overhead Lines

Course description: The purpose of this course is to teach how to go about patrolling overhead lines. The importance of patrolling to reliable operation of the lines is discussed, and examples of structure, hardware, conductor, insulator, and obstruction problems are shown and explained. An example of how to detect problems while patrolling an overhead line is also given. At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to explain why patrolling overhead lines is important. They should understand the types of problems to look for when patrolling overhead lines. They should be able to detect structure problems, problems with broken or damaged hardware on a pole or tower, problems with conductors and insulators, and current or developing obstructions of the lines. They should also be able to demonstrate the ability to detect problems when patrolling overhead lines.

- Describe the following safety precautions to observe when troubleshooting overhead distribution lines: reporting the location, obtaining clearance or work instructions, confirming information and instructions, and knowing the consequences of actions
- Sectionalizing Primary, Part 1
- Explain when it may be appropriate to close in a line that has tripped open
- Describe three ways that a line can be sectionalized
- Sectionalizing Primary, Part 2
- Describe the principles for locating trouble on a primary line by sectionalizing and energizing portions of the line
- Testing Secondary, Part 1
- Describe how to locate trouble by testing for voltage at a customer’s meter
- Testing Secondary, Part 2
- Describe how to locate trouble by testing for power output from a distribution transformer
- Describe how to locate trouble by testing for power to a distribution transformer
